Vera Lynn, the iconic ‘Voice of Hope’ duirng WWII tells everyone to “keep smiling and keep singing” during the coronavirus pandemic as she releases new song to mark her 103’rd birthday.
Vera Lynn is a British institution.
Although she may not be as well-known now as she was to previous generations, hers was the voice that kept up the spirits of the British nation during what Winston Churchill called “The Darkest Hour” and beyond when, for a while, invasion by the Nazi war machine seemed inevitable and it was only through great sacrifice that it was eventually defeated.
This famous singer performed not just in Britain but also to its troops fighting across the world including those sent to Egypt and Burma.
Aside from her vividly patriotic songs, her version of “We’ll meet again” struck a deep chord with the millions of soldiers, sailors and airmen in the front line and with their loved ones at home.
She was also an inspiration for the Gibraltarian families who were separated for years during which, women, children and the elderly were evacuated to England, Northern Ireland, Jamaica and Madeira whilst their able bodied menfolk remained on the Rock – the target of Hitler’s “Operation Felix”-or served in the armed forces overseas.
“We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when
But I know we’ll meet again some sunny day
Keep smiling through, just like you always do
Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away”
Hers was always a cheerful and energetic message of hope and optimism in the darkness that befalls humanity from time to time. She represents a generation which was irrepressible and devoted to duty.
She was born in Essex , England in 1917 and many might say that we could do with her talent for joyful inspiration now during the Covid 19 crisis . . . well we can!
For Dame Vera Lynn who is 103 years old has just released a new music video to mark her birthday; and she tells us to “keep smiling and keep singing” during this pandemic.
Certainly a cheerful call to arms for all of us, in this our time of trouble.
