The University of Gibraltar has set a record for its intake of international students in 2020, with total enrolments almost doubling this year, despite the negative impact that restrictions and lockdowns are having on higher education worldwide.

The University of Gibraltar welcomed in over 200 students during its enrolment week, which the university has described as “a significant increase” compared with last year and reflects the wider range of programmes offered by the University as well as its appeal for those looking for UK-aligned standards and face-to-face delivery”.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gibraltar, Professor Bachleda, said, “Despite all the challenges affecting higher education institutions globally as a result of the pandemic I am pleased to say that our enrolments have more than doubled and we have the largest number of international students to date.”

This has also come after many months of international praise for Gibraltar for its low rate of infections throughout the pandemic, with all cases having recovered, mostly at home in self isolation, with zero deaths to date.

A press release issued by the University states that local students will be studying alongside learners from Canada, Guatemala, Germany, Nigeria, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, Morocco, Spain and the USA.

To welcome the new students on campus and settle them into life in Gibraltar, the University hosted several events which included beach volleyball and a walking tour of Gibraltar.

The University has also published an ‘unofficial guide’ for new students. The printed guide sees lawyer and author of the book ‘Youniversity: Gibraltar’s Guide to Studying at University’, Philip Vasquez turn his attention to writing a guide for students who may be unfamiliar with Gibraltar.
