The new Mayor of Gibraltar is also the 2009 winner of the Miss World competition, Kaiane Aldorino Lopez.
In the pantheon of famous Gibraltarians, which include renowned nuclear physicists, jurists, fashion designers, athletes, high ranking military officers, and authors, Miss World 2009 ranks very high indeed.
And her appointment as the highest civic authority in our City has been met with universal approval and interest. She will be assisted by the Deputy Mayor, John Gonçalves, a one-time Vice President of the International Basketball Federation.

Prior to her appointment, Mrs Lopez-Aldorino had served as Gibraltar’s Deputy Mayor (appointed in 2014) and has been involved in many social and philanthropic events and initiatives in Gibraltar and abroad.
On the 7th of July 2011, Kaiane was presented with both the ‘Freedom of the City’ and the ‘Gibraltar Medallion of Honour’ through a unanimous vote in the Gibraltar Parliament. The Chief Minister at the time, Sir Peter Caruana, recognised her:
“extraordinary personal achievement in becoming Miss World 2009 and the enormous pride and global recognition that her achievement has represented for Gibraltar as a whole”
The Miss Gibraltar contest has always been very popular and the singular honour of having won this international accolade has led to the continuing popularity of the pageant.
The first Miss Gibraltar contest was organised by the bilingual Gibraltarian newspaper “Vox” in 1959. Every year since then, Gibraltar has sent a representative to the event wherever in the world it has been held.
The 2017 Miss Gibraltar pageant takes place on the 8th of July at the Tercentenary Sports Hall. The prestigious local events company Santos Productions will be the organisers on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.
